ASHLAND BUILD A BED

To give beds to the hundreds of children in our community that do not have a bed to sleep in.

The mission of Ashland Build A Bed is to promote healthy bedtime rituals, improve the quality of sleep, and create happier days, brighter dreams and more opportunities for a lifetime of success. The mission is to ensure that P-12 Eastern Kentucky children (ages 2-18) are guaranteed a proper place to sleep in their home. Each recipient is given a twin sized bed and mattress, a set of sheets, a blanket or quilt, a hygiene kit, books, night-light or alarm clock and stuffed animal. In March we had over 650 applications for children to receive a bed through Build A Bed in partnership with Morehead State University. We were able to construct and send home 300 beds to children in over 30 counties. To the other 350 children who remain sleeping on floors, couches, and play pens we are thinking about each of you too. We promise to continue to shine a light on the importance of every child in our community having a place to lay their head at night.

To provide a complete bed with night time kit for each child cost a low estimate of $350. Lumber alone for 100 beds is over $11,000. Seeing the look on a child's face when they lay in their brand new bed for the first time is priceless. Knowing that they will get a good night's rest so they can focus on school and achieving their dreams is icing on the cake. Ashland Build A Bed, a project of the Kentucky Credit Union League Ashland Chapter, would not be possible without the generosity of donors, sponsors, and volunteers. This grant would help Ashland Build A Bed permanently take over the application and build process from the FIVCO area in Kentucky, which is made up of Boyd, Carter, Lawrence, Greenup, and Elliot Counties. By Ashland Build A Bed taking full responsibility of the FIVCO area, this would ease the burden of the Morehead Build A Bed financial support and provide more coverage for more children in the total 30 counties covered between both builds.

As a parent struggling to make ends meet, one of the most gut-wrenching things that can happen is to have someone deny you and your family help because you don't believe the same things they do, look the way they want you to, or affiliate with the things they do. Sadly, many have experienced this. We’re a group of volunteers dedicated to building, assembling and delivering safe and comfortable beds to children and families in need--no matter what they look like, who they vote for, or what church they do or don't belong to. We are simply people helping people; a philosophy Credit Unions live by. That has always been our heart, and always will be. We want to help you, no matter what. There are no strings attached. Every child deserves the physical and mental benefits that come with a better night's sleep. Every child deserves to have a bed of their own. When we deliver a bed, we walk into a home with nothing but love and a desire to bless a family. Loving others—people helping people.
