Help At-Risk Youth Succeed
To help youth be safe, supported, and successful.
Haven House Services is the place where youth who need help find it. Since 1973, we have filled a gap in services for young people in our community who are dealing with difficult, often heartbreaking, situations. Whether the issue is truancy, gang involvement, homelessness, a crisis at home or school, or problems involving the juvenile court system, our 11 programs help more than 1,200 youth each year overcome challenges and find a path to success. We are the designated “point of entry” agency in our community for youth under the age of 24 experiencing homelessness. We operate Wrenn House - the Triangle’s only emergency shelter for youth ages 10-17. We also operate 8 diversion and intervention programs focused on helping youth get their life on a positive path. Among these programs is Second Round - a fitness-based intervention program for youth ages 12-21 that helps youth build strength and skills in four key areas: (1) Wellness, (2) Learning, (3) Leadership and (4) Community.
After more than four and a half decades of helping youth in our community find safe, stable living environments, it is Haven House’s turn to move into a permanent home. We are in the process of purchasing a new facility that will house all of our programs except for our Wrenn House youth shelter. The $25,000 would help Haven House upfit/renovate the Second Round program space/gym in our new facility. This after-school fitness and boxing program serves youth in Wake County ages 12-21. By helping youth identify their personal goals and motivating them to improve overall health, attend school and improve grades, stay out of trouble, become leaders, and engage in the community, Second Round strives to help youth attain long-term success. This grant would help us transform the new space to fit the needs of this unique and very popular program.
As this grant would help renovate/upfit the Second Round program space/gym in our new facility, it will have a significant and long-lasting impact on the youth in the greater Raleigh area. Each year, the program serves approximately 150 youth – many of them at high risk for involvement in the juvenile justice system. By helping to build a permanent home for this program, this grant has the potential to help thousands of youth over the years overcome their challenges and build the skills needed to find a path to success. All of Haven House’s programs have a long-lasting impact on the community because when you strengthen a youth, you strengthen a family, and you strengthen the entire community in which they live. When a youth avoids involvement with the court system, avoids joining a gang, or is prevented from running away and/or living on the streets, the impact is far greater than just one life.
